Coot is a graphics program for building, refining and analysing macromolecular models obtained with crystallographic procedures. However, little are the sources for Mac OS. The Scott Lab Page helps out. They also provide a lot of other Crystallography related software suits for Mac OS. Thanks guys!

Biochemical Algorithms Library... a nice tool for the category of modelling and 3D structure visualization. A bit advanced, but look at their raytracing gallery. Amazing job and Open Source!

Organize your data in an Electronic Laboratory Notebook (ELN).

My biggest advantages are:
- most machines produce electronic outputs these days anyway, so justattach them to your experimental notes and that's it.

- no hassle for reading others handwriting (including my own!!)

- SEARCH FUNCTION, so no turning pages forever until you found what you need...

- keep up with what's going on in your lab from wherever in the world

* iPad AND Android version available.

* Desktop application is coming soon.

* Downloadable offline version as a backup for leaving people.

* Students fee is really small!

Mendeley is a literatur organizing tool, that has many different advantages over commonly used tools like eg. Endnote:

- It's free!

- It has an automated import function based on the headder information of your *.pdf you want to import - so you do not have to fill you a form for each paper!

- It can import whole folders at a bunch - so you don't have to put in each paper once at a time!

- It can monitor a folder of your choice (eg. your 'paper' folder) and everytime a new *.pdf goes in there it goes into your mendeley database.

- It has a search function - so you can appropriately search within your paper collection.

- It has a easy to use and reliable plug-in for Microsoft Word AND OpenOffice.

- You can have an Andriod (Droideley) or an iPhone/iPod (Mendeley Reference Manager Lite) App on your phone.

All you need is to sign up (to get an web access) and install the desktop program (that allows you to do most of the interesting stuff).

A nice and easy tool to organize your lab. Access from each computer with internet connection. Content can be exported if you like to save your data anywhere external.

Good thing different our previous solution LabLife: they claim to be and alway will be FREE! Great support thanks again for all your help guys!

A really good tool to analyze your microscopic images in a qualitative and quantitative manner. The program is free and will hopefully be in the future so don't forget to cite them if you used their tool. It comes with some example files so just try to get started.

PyMOL_v.99 (win)

As the v.99 WAS and IS FREE (not like the new one...), but no longer available at the official webpage, I put a download here as I am often asked for it. Unfortunately, up until this version no PowerPoint embedding was implemented and so you have to render your movies the old style... Anyway a lot of information can be found on Have fun.

Unofficial Windows Binaries for Python Extension Packages:

Apart from many other good things one interesting part is the PyMol version for free to download. either go to Chris's webpage or simply klick here (win32 version).
